A smaller footprint makes efficiency savings on land and infrastructure and is key to making homes at An Camas Mòr affordable.

Long, thin plots with the houses next to the street, and closer to each other means An Camas Mòr will have shorter streets, pipes and wires, than a conventional layout. The shorter streets mean that An Camas Mòr will have a smaller environmental and physical footprint, an improved microclimate and shorter walking distances.

Houses on the edge of a long plot, value the woodland environment

The key to the design of more affordable homes is placing them on the corner of the site, close to the street and right up to the plot boundary at the side. By drastically reducing the amount of non-porous surface, this saves on both land and material, making the community more sustainable economically and environmentally.

The innovative layout of homes increases the useful space

An Camas Mòr will make good use of the garden by making space for an outbuilding that could be used as a workspace or a garden bothy that can be seasonally sub-let. This gives people the opportunity to adapt or extend a home in the future- this is part of the economic sustainability of An Camas Mòr.

Locally sourced materials

Locally sourced timber reduces the embodied energy in construction, and is an affordable material.

Joined-up buildings

The pattern of joined-up buildings is a distinctly Scottish characteristic- it makes efficient use of heat energy by decreasing the area of exposed external wall.

Energy effective: the efficient use of the sun’s light and heat

Traditional pitched roofs make good use of the sun’s energy. Larger roof surfaces towards the street, let more light down to street level. A smaller roof surface to the back, leaves room for larger windows to let natural light in.
