The Self Build Loan Fund

The Scottish Government has provided a time-limited fund to assist self or custom builders to finance the construction period for their new home.

You can find out more about it from The Highlands Small Communities Housing Trust.

The fund runs from the 1 September 2018 to 31 August 2021 and is open to applications from individuals who have been unable to obtain mainstream self-build mortgage finance, but who will be able to repay the loan upon completion of their project. The maximum loan available stands at £175,000.

Case Study: Coylum Road, Rothiemurchus

An Camas Mòr case study image
Coylum Road, Rothiemurchus

Coylum Road was built on a plot by plot basis, within a unifying design set down by Rothiemurchus’ architect, Ben Tindall, to create ‘variety within a pattern’.

Design Guidelines for Coylum Road that specify plot locations, storey height and widths, materials and details based on the Victorian ‘vernacular’, with freedom of expression to the rear, were used to create a design that is both popular and value-enhancing. The Design Guidelines for An Camas Mòr will differ from Coylum Road in that the homes will be designed to be more affordable, with housing built on the edge of the plots to save on infrastructure costs.
